ILLINOIS RECEIVES SCENIC BYWAY GRANTS

WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Illinois Department of Transportation has received two Scenic Byway grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation that will benefit the Metro East.

The grants include:

  • $229,296 to create multimedia iPod tours, interactive online study units and classroom lesson plans geared toward young travelers about Cahokia Mounds, which is along the Great River Road.
  • $395,600 to construct experience hubs and implement a new byway sign program for Historic Route 66, which runs from East St. Louis to Chicago.

“Tourism allows us to showcase the natural and historic highlights of Southwestern and Southern Illinois,” said Costello. “These funds will help promote both tourism and economic development in our area.”
