Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Madison Police Department has received a $27,011 Secure Our Schools grant through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program of the U.S. Department of Justice. The funds will be used to hire officers specifically to work in schools or purchase safety equipment.
“As a strong supporter of the federal community policing program, I am pleased that these funds are going to our area,” Costello said, a former police officer. “Increased police presence has proven to be an important factor in reducing crime in our region and nationwide, and it is critical to provide a safe learning environment so that students can reach their academic potential.”
